2006 Harley Davidson Sportster 1200 Custom?
Having some problems with the carburetor on my bike. I re-jetted about 1 1/2 year ago, and it ran fine. but now, I have a problem with not being able to get the proper air mixture, and the bike is poppin’ and sputtering lately. Cleaned the plugs – ran good for a little while. Should I start simple and just take the carb off the bike and thoroughly clean? Maybe clean out the tank (possible gunk in the tank)?
yeah, yeah, yeah.
Thanks David. Yes, always better to start simple.
Good idea don t. I did change the plugs over to a “split fire” type plug months back.
Hey steinway, carb cleaner should have the same affect, no?
Yes, I need to lay off the choke.
You might have some trash on the needle valve for your float. Try cleaning your carb and check the gaskets on both sides of your intake manifold. They might need replacing. You can tell if they are bad by carefully spraying either starting fluid or brake cleaner by them when the engine is idling. Starting fluid is a little dangerous as it is explosive. If you use that it should make the engine run faster – if gaskets are bad, break cleaner will kill the engine. Any change in the sound of your engine with either one means bad gaskets. Keep fluids away from your paint job on tank. Do not spray in your air cleaner/carb, that defeats the whole purpose of the test. These gaskets need replacing from time to time. If they are bad your engine will suck way too much air and screw things up similar to what you described. Worst case scenario is that your ignition module is starting to go south. Sometimes they run ok when cold but run like crap when warmed up. Same with bad coil. If telling you this doesn’t solve todays problem, someday it will.
