What is the best bike to make a bobber out of?

I am interested in doing a bobber project and want to stay true to what a bobber is – taking stuff off the bike.

However, there are some parts that I would want to change out – bars, seat, exhaust, rear fender, etc…

Is there any particular make/model that is easier to make a bobber out of and/or has more parts available for it?

I want to do this as economically as possible and would rather NOT mod a new Harley!

Ideally, I want the best/coolest bobber I can come up with for around $5,000 total investment.

Any links / pics / dealers / catalog reccommendations would be great as well!

The short answer is:

Cheap!!!

Harley’s were made into bobbers because they were a cheap bike to purchase at the time. If you really wanted to go cheap, old school, and really get into the “feel” of the bobber “culture,” I would highly recommend using a Ural. These bikes are BMW clones that are made in Russia. You can get a brand new one with a side car for about $8000. Used ones and without side cars are much less.

They have only been imported for a few years, so a used one will not be very old, and you have to be a tinkerer, because these bikes just love mechanics.
