How do I know if my Harley-Davidson Sportster has a Stage 1 installed?
I recently bought a ’95 sportster 883 and I’ve been reading about installing a stage one kit. I’ve also had a couple people ask me if I had a stage one kit installed. The trouble is, I don’t even know if it’s installed on the bike already. I’ve been unable to track down the old owner to ask him. The bike has the Screamin’ Eagle pipes and Air Cleaner. The bike is pretty loud and has pretty good power for an 883, so I don’t really know what to think.
In HD lingo, Stage 1 modifications include performance exhaust and air cleaner systems, which you have already.
Stage 2 modifications include changing camshafts and/or pistons and cylinders.
The typical Stage 2 modification is to install the cylinders and pistons from a 1200, there is a kit available in the Screamin Eagle catalog. If you’ve got even more money to spend, you can swap the heads for Buell heads that will make a significant horsepower increase.
