Question on Harley Davidson Sportsters?
Hi. I got a 2000 model 883 Sportster. I changed the oil and filter in it the last time. I opened the drain plug and drained all the oil that came out. Then changed the filter and let it drain also. But when I wanted to fil the oil, I noticed that the oil tank was still almost full. I took the drain plug back out and shook the bike and rocked it, hoping to get all the oil out. I even took the spark plug wires off and turned the engine over a few times. But still there was a lot of oil in the tank.
Is that normal? If not, how do i go about draining all of the oil out?
I know there are some real HD experts on Y!A , your help would be appreciated.
I own two sportsters. You most likely drained the primary, not the oil bag.
So, what you need to do is:
1. Remove the inspection cover on the primary (left) side of the bike–should be two allen bolts. Drain the primary by removing the plug on the bottom of the case. I am certain this is what you drained. make sure the bike is straight up. If no oil comes out or after its done draining, replace the plug and pour 1 quart of formula plus into the inspection cover and replace.Do not crank down on these allens, they don’t need to be super tight.
2. Drain the engine oil by pulling the plug on the hose.(BEHIND THE CASE, RIGHT UNDER THE BATTERY) It can be a pain to see sometimes. It just hangs there. Drain the ENGINE oil from the hose then put the plug back in.
3. go to the filter and remove and replace. Open the oil bag and fill with 3 quarts of your favorite oil.
I highly recommend you buy the factory manual. do not operate the bike until you have fluid in the primary/transmission (they share this oil). go to www.xlforum.net and join that message board. I am DIESEL on that board. There is a ton of expertise on the bike there.
If you are unsure, ask a question there. If you don’t have the skills there is most likely a member in your area who is willing to help. Sportsters are great bikes, but they are expensive to rebuild if you burn up the tranny or the motor.
