Harley-Davidson Iron 883 Sportster vs. Honda Shadow Phantom?
Which would be better for a first bike and a long daily commute of 140 miles (1hr 15 min each way). Would the liquid cooled Honda engine provide a more comfortable ride? What about reliability?
Harleys are as reliable as can be.
The engine does not make the ride.
Both will comfortably make the trip on a daily basis if set up to fit you correctly.
I now ride an HD, but I used to commute (2 hours) on an old CB650. I’ve had water cooled, too.
Air vs. water, Honda vs. HD…… long time arguments that have die-hards on both sides.
It’s not wise to totally trust the opinion of anyone that won’t truly consider the other side.
Now, as far as the first bike part goes – I don’t recommend bikes. There is such a large variety, most of which I have not ridden. I do recommend a Basic Rider’s Course before buying a first bike. It gives you an idea of what you may want in a bike.
