Harley coils not getting 12 volts?
This is for a dual plug sportster 1977.The coils are 5 ohm Dynatech and the ignition module is a Crane (both coils and IM are 12 years old).I am not getting a spark.Battery checks out at 12.46 volts but both coils read 9.92 volts with ignition switch on.Where the drop? .Does the power from the battery usually go through the module before reaching the coils?
Two great replys – here is bit more info. The Crane single fire module is an earlier model than the HI-4(14 yrs old?).I remember when I ordered the coils I was aware most single fire/dual plug applicatioms require 3 ohms but Crane recomended the 5 ohms.Bike is a 86 ci Ironhead and ran strong for more than a decade.Tore bike completly for a rebuilt and this is when the no fire situation came up.Both of you guys mentioned wiring and that will be my homework for today.
Yes, first time I checked anything on those coils.
The coils are fed power directly from the key switch by the white wire, so no, the power does not go through the module first. Also, your coils are actually wrong. You should be running 3 ohm coils, 5 ohm coils are generally used in points-type ignitions. Reading directly from a Crane HI-4 installation manual….”Coils used with the HI-4 must have at least 2 ohms primary resistance. Coils with 4 ohms or higher MAY be used, but will not produce optimum output.” All Crane coils are 3 ohm.
To figure out where your voltage drop is, disconnect the white wire (or whatever color wire that feed 12v to the primary coil, there should be a jumper wire from that terminal to your other coil). Now that this wire is disconnected, check the voltage in that wire, if it reads same as battery voltage, your coils are bad, if it still reads 9.9, then that wire or it’s source (should be key switch) is bad.
I would definitely recommend switching out the coils though, you will get a much better spark.
