Harley Sportster question?
This probably sounds dumb, but I need to know how to start a harley sportster. Its my husband’s and he is gone for a few months.
What do I turn the key to? Acc. or Ignition or on over? What button do I press first?
I’m just trying to learn so I can start it while he is gone.

I’m not trying to ride the bike, I just want to start it at least once a month to keep it running good. He did explain to me how to start it but it has been a while and I have forgotten.
I know to turn the key, but to what, they’re are different things to turn it to.
Then there is a start and a run button, which goes first?
No baby, you are not dumb or asking a dumb question. You’re doing a fine job AND what would be dumb is not asking, then going out and trying and screwing something up.
OK, Before you do anything, check the oil and make sure it meets the specified amount,… then turn the key to ‘ignition’. Make DAMN SURE ITS IN NEUTRAL!!! It has a green ‘N’ in the dash. (harley’s do not have an in-gear ignition lock-out) If the bike has a carburetor, pull the choke knob out about half way. You will be able to tell if it is fuel injected when you turn on the key:you will hear a small high pitched buzzing that lasts about 3.5 seconds. On the right handlebar there will be a switch that indicates ‘run’, or ‘stop’. switch it to the run position. The starter button is also on the right handlebar. Don’t twist the throttle, pull in the clutch just to be safe, and hit the button but do not hold it down. If it does not start, twist the throttle but let it snap back, then try it again. When its running you can SLOWLY let out the clutch…if it starts to grab then stop the motor, use the gear shifter to find neutral, and start the procedure again. (here’s a pic of the choke):

-after it has run for around 3 to 5 minutes push the choke knob back in. twist the throttle a few times to run the RPM’s but don’t hold it wide open. After around 10 minutes go ahead and shut it down and turn the key off.
Don’t listen to the ignoramus in the green hat: he’s got mental problems & don’t even ride a bike, much less own one. He don’t even know anything about motorcycles. He sticks his big nose into every harley question he can just to spew garbage. He got mad ’cause he got kicked out of a HD dealer and this is how he gets his revenge. Even 8 year kids know when to behave sometimes. He can’t stop because he acts like a retard.
