why would the clutch on a harley davidson make a knocking or pinging noise and quit pulling?
i am interested in buying a 1982 ironhead harley davidson 1000 sportster. When the bike is running and in neutral it makes a pinging or kinda rattleing noise, and when you pull in the clutch the noise goes away completely. the clutch was froze and wouldn’t even pull in at first, and when took the primary casing off and ajusted the clutch and got it working. We put the casing back on and put it in first gear and it would start to pull but then it would make another noise and slip… what could this be and how difficult would it be fix it myself..
SOUNDS LIKE YOU NEED TO REPLACE THE CLUTCH, THAT ONES WORN OUT!!!! WHAT WE USED TO DO BACK THEN WAS TAKE THE CLUTCH PLATES OUT, KEEPING THEM IN THE ORDER YOU TOOK EM OUT, REVERSE THAT ORDER AND BEFORE YOU PUT EM BACK IN FIND YOU A SMOOTH CONCRETE SURFACE AND LAY THE CLUTCH PLATE ON IT, RUB IT IN A FIGURE 8 MOTION,TO ROUGH IT UP, TURN IT OVER AND DO THE OTHER SIDE OF THE CLUTCH PLATE, THEN PUT EM BACK IN, IN REVERSE ORDER FROM WHAT THEY WERE WHEN YOU ORIGINALLY TOOK EM OUT, THAT PUTS YOUR LESS WORN CLUTCH PLATES TO THE INSIDE OF THE CLUTCH BASKET CLOSEST TO THE TRANS. AND THEIR THE ONES THAT FIRST START PULLING….THATS A SHORT TERM FIX, BUT YOU’LL HAVE TO REPLACE EM TO EVER GET IT TO WORK RIGHT…..DO THEY HAVE A BURT SMELL? IF SO, THEIR TRASH?
