Why wont my Harley start when its hot?
I have the same problem. does anyone have an answer?
‘When the engine is hot on my 2003 Harley Sportster xlc 1200 it backfires through the exhaust and starts very hard if at all. I was wondering if this has something to do with the ignition module or what. The only modifications i have on the bike are a screaming eagle ignition module and dyna jet carb kit. Jetted wrong, Likely way too rich or way too lean. Where is the pilot screw set? What do the plugs look like? What jets (main and pilot) are in it? How does it start when cold? Does it need a lot of choke to get going when cold? Most people who “jet” bikes; set the mains too rich and the mid-range too lean! Bigger jets DO NOT mean more power! Air fuel mixture that is too rich or too lean will make a hot bike hard to start. There is a “Sweet spot” for every bike. Harley’s’ are very temperamental because of one carb feeding two cylinders from a common manifold. Intake leaks or dirty air cleaner can cause this as well. I would check timing just to make sure that it is right on spec, just to eliminate over or under advanced timing issues. Make sure that the spark advance is working correctly. If it has solid lifters, the valve clearance may be too tight, however I think that even Sportys had hydraulic valve lifters? Best of Luck to you, hope this helps.
