can anyone give me opinions on a harley davidson sportster (1999 if possible) as far as reliability and such?
im thinking about buying one. ive heard that harleys can be on the expensive side as far as maintenance though
A few years ago I rode a friend’s Harley-Davidson. Don’t remember if it was a Sportster or a Dyna Glide. I do remember it was a piece of junk. Horrible seating and handlebar position. Forward controls were uncomfortable and awkward to use. Bike was loud, but slow. Mediocre suspension. Awful vibration. Engine was mounted rigid in frame, not rubber mounted. Mirrors were useless, again due to vibration. I rode the bike about 20 miles. Couldn’t wait to get off.
I kept thinking, this is one of the many fabled bikes from Harley-Davidson. What a piece of junk!! My 1977 BMW R100S was a better bike than this bike from Milwaukee.
Every time I ride a Harley-Davidson, I am sadly disappointed.
And yes, repairs can and will be expensive. Family member had a Sportster that was purchased used. Bike needed something repaired about every two to three weeks. Needed rear axle replaced due to a seized bearing. That was a couple of hundred dollars.
This is my experience and my views. I am sure you will read views the opposite of mine. It is good that you are looking for real information before you buy. If you do buy the Sportster, I wish you good luck. You just may need it.
