
Harley CV carb. tuning problems?
I have a 94 XLH sportster which ran great until recently. I made a stop one day and when I came out there was a puddle of gas under the bike. I barely made it home due to sputtering. It sounded like it was running on empty so I hit the reserve. Still ran like crap. Made it home and took off the carb to check the float and inside was packed with what looked like sugar. Stripped the carb apart, cleaned it in a parts washer at work, bought a rebuild kit and reinstalled. The bike will fire up and idle ok but when you twist the throttle it coughs and won’t rev up. I cleaned the tank/petcock out and replaced the fuel line. Any ideas ??
Footnote….. Tonight I fired it up and with it idling, pulled out the choke and it rev up smoothly to about 3000 rpm. Does that still mean I need to replace the vacuum diaphram or is the another problem I need to deal with ? Thanx to all in advance for the tips and advice.
I can’t say 100% sure, but 98%…yes. You just described exactly, the symptoms of the SLIDE DIAPHRAGM BEING RIPPED AND/OR PINCHED. If you had the carb top off and the slide out…it is very possible and easy to pinch or rip the rubber diaphragm…..if it is…you need a new one…can not be fixed.
It is also possible that you put the main jet/needle seat in upside-down like the guy above said……the tapered internal diameter goes IN the carb throat…FLAT side towards the jet.
Settings…
Make sure float height is correctly set….you will need a manual or have a shop doit, to hard to describe ( but easily done)
DO NOT under any cicrumstances, shim the needle or cut the spring, leave them alone. Leave stock main jet alone. Install #45 pilot jet…HD#27170-89. LIGHTLY seat the idle mix screw, then back off 2 turns. If idle mix plug is STILL installed…LIGHTLY drill it out with a 3/16 drill bit…DO NOT DRILL PAST THE PLUG!!!!….screw a sheetmetal screw into the hole and pull out with pliers.
These settings, on a Sportster will work ok with most air cleaners and exhaust, only way to get better is with a dyno.
NOTE: Did you replace the INTAKE SEALS??? if not DO IT!!!…since carb has to come back off…now is the time for $8 and 20 minutes of PREVENTATIVE MAINTENANCE.
EDIT:…..I would also HIGHLY recommend draining the gas out of the tank, remove and clean the petcock and reinstall it…use liquid teflon thread sealant on the tank threads.
