Which Shovelhead engine should I buy?
Im looking at buying a used Shovelhead engine. Are there certain years I should watch out for? How available are parts for the older ones? I certainly don’t mind doing work on it. What are the Ultima and S&S ones like? (compared to the original). Who makes the original? Harley?. Thanks in advance.
harley made the originals from 1966 through 1984. with some built in 1985 to fulfill police bike contracts.
there were 2 main types. the “flat side” or “generator shovels” 1966 through 1969. these are sometimes called “pan shovels” by grey beards like me because they have the same cases as panheads.
the 1970 through 1984 shovels are commonly called “cone shovels” due to the nose cone on the timing side of the cases. these are also called alternator shovels.
there are also variations in the oiling system on different year shovels.
shovels have the biggest valves & ports of any Harley ever made & a durable lower end so its pretty easy to double the horse power on an original shovel, especially with a 93″ or 96″ big bore stroker kit.
but its very rare to see an original shovel head that doesn’t leak a little oil. if that bothers you you would be better off with one of the newer after market engines.
S&S is the gold standard of used Harley parts and engines.
